| Mark T. Smith is one of New York City's most prolific artists, and his influence is now being felt well outside of New York. Before he turned 30, he had already provided illustrations for the likes of the Walt Disney Company, Harper Collins, and been commissioned by Absolut Vodka for an Absolut Smith national ad campaign, won over dozen awards from such prestigious organizations as the Society of Illustrators, Print Magazine, Cannes Interactive and had nine major solo art exhibits in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.
His style defies simple categorization, which has both delighted and confounded critics from the very beginning of his career. Marks subject matter is as diverse as his pallet: past themes for painting series have included heroes, religious iconography, hot rods, Christianity, cowboy culture, esoteric religions, animals, and urban violence. Although his paintings may appear to be abstract the work always originates from observational drawing.
Smith was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1968. Mark graduated from Pratt Institute in 1990 with a BFA. His corporate patrons include Walt Disney Company, IBM, MTV, Showtime Networks, Nickelodeon, Yum Brands, Hot Rod Magazine, The New York Knicks, and dozens other major companies. His work has also joined the collections of many private collectors. Smith painted two life-sized cows for the Cow Parade 2000, which were installed all around New York City in the summer of 2000. Recently he painted two Chrysler PT Cruisers for Daimler-Chrysler. One of the cars was auctioned for the charity Operation Smile and the other is on a two year nation wide tour of the United States ending with its inclusion in the permanent collection of the Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Detroit.
Several exhibitions of Smiths work are scheduled for this Spring 2003 one in Jersey City, NJ and one in Tribeca, NYC. In addition to the exhibitions, my work is part of an enormous international campaign for Taco Bell, also launching this spring. My artwork will be featured in stores nation-wide, and internationally.
